One of most notorious cases of summary justice was addressed by the TRC. In July 1985 Maki Skosana was necklaced by her comrades.
They believed that she had betrayed eight young COSAS activists on the East Rand to the security forces, who then killed them.
The necklacing of Maki Skosana was filmed by the South African Broadcasting Corporation and frequently used by the apartheid state media in anti-resistance propaganda. In 1995 the askari (former African National Congress soldier turned death squad operative) Joe Mamasela told the TRC that Maki Skosana was working with him (SABC 1995).
However, the situation was more complex. Upon investigation of the case the TRC made the following finding:
Ms Maki Skhosana was wrongly accused of being an informer and responsible for the death of the 'comrades' in the booby-trapped hand grenade incidents.
The commission finds that Ms Skhosana was not aware of the fact that 'Mike' was Joe Mamasela, an askari.
The commission finds that the necklacing was a gruesome act of extraordinary violence that cast a blight on the struggle for freedom.
The commission finds the 'comrades' and the community at Duduza responsible for the necklacing of Ms Skhosana, and that the UDF [United Democratic Front] and the ANC [African National Congress] must accept responsibility for this gross violation of human rights (TRC 1998, vol 3: 667).

The necklace murders were a result of a form of vigilantism by blacks to discipline those they felt betrayed them and supported the apartheid system. I am not condoning their actions but what i am saying is that we all need to look at the root of the cause, OPPRESSION which brought these people to partake in such extreme violence. two wrongs don't ever make a right.

Firstly I'd like to point out the fact that white people are perfectly capable of this kind of evil. Do some research on lynchings, especially in the American South. You will find yourself saying the same things like "I can't understand how people can do something like that".
Secondly, South Africa is like a giant open wound. This country was born out of a long history of violence and warfare. That violence never left and is present today for all to see.
Like all wounds, healing is a function of time and care. By talking about this in a civilized manner and trying to grapple it, that is a form of care. Inciting racism and hatred is like the bacteria that threatens to infect the wounds. The giant wound that is this nation can heal with time and with care. I searched for this after seeing a YouTube vid. I'm glad I did, as seeing the truths of the world is the most important thing, even tho very horendous and i feel so bad for the poor lady.
As i see more and more what people are truely capable of, i see more and more about peoples current mindsets of events like these, most are humanistic and compassionate, but many people totally miss the point of witnessing stuff like this, first or second hand, it's supposed to make you start thinking about the WHY'S of how humans can do these things....and yes, it always comes back to oppression.
